Reading is a critical function in society today and an essential part of life. We all know that reading to children is a positive thing and can help them succeed in life, but sometimes kids aren't so thrilled to pick up a book to read or have their parents read to them.
Some parents just don't push it and leave it at that, but there are many advantages to reading, including:
To encourage a love for reading, here are some fun and creative ways to inspire your children to love books and reading in general:
1. Book Treasure Hunt
Make a game of reading and send your kids on a book treasure hunt. All you have to do is leave clues around your home for them to discover, but make sure to hide them in unexpected places. To get really creative, make the clues related to the story or book that you’re hiding. Then when your kids finally find the hidden book, they’ll realize how valuable they are. Play this game with your kids weekly, bi-weekly or monthly and always make it a new book. Most importantly, have fun with it!
2. Favorite Authors
If you child loves one special author, make sure to follow him/her online and find out what they're doing, where they are speaking at, and if they have any special giveaways or announcements that you can share with your children. And if they will be at a local bookstore or event, make sure that you take your child, so that they can meet them in real life. You can even go one step further by having them write a fan letter to them. Who knows, they just might write them back!
3. D-E-A-R Family Time
Have D-E-A-R family time at home, which stands for “Drop Everything and Read.” Set aside special time each day or week where the family does nothing but read for a specific amount of time. The family can read a book together or have their own reading material, but it must be uninterrupted reading time that everybody engages in.
4. Use Props
For little ones just learning to read, use props to make reading more fun. Buy or make puppets or grab their favorite stuffed animals and have them act out the story or be the ones that read to your little ones.
5. Read With Animation
When reading out loud to you child, use different voices and bring the story to life. Become the different characters in the story and you child will pick up on your enthusiasm and be more willing to do the same when reading on their own.
6. Creating A Reading Nook
Create a special reading nook or area for your kids to read. Make it comfortable and spacious and provide tons of reading material for them to indulge in – everything from magazines to comic books and more.
